How to Make a Decoden Keychain
Keychains receive more impact than display crafts, so the base and attachment point matter as much as the decoration. Use a rigid blank, keep the ring hole completely clear, and choose compact charms that will not catch on pockets or bags.
Select and test the blank
Acrylic or another rigid maker-approved base is easiest to decorate. Clean both sides, check for protective film and test a small cream glue bead. Mask the attachment hole and a narrow border around it.
Design for movement
Use a centered focal piece and low-profile fillers rather than decorations that extend beyond the blank. Keep weight balanced below the ring so the keychain hangs naturally and the charm backs have full contact.
Pipe and place in one layer
Create a controlled shallow pattern, working away from the attachment point. Add charms with tweezers and verify that nothing overlaps the edge. Do not install hardware while the material is wet.
Cure, assemble and inspect
Leave the blank flat for a full cure, then remove the mask and attach the ring without twisting the decoration. Tug only on the hardware, not the charms. Inspect periodically because everyday impacts can loosen pieces.
